WHEN THE SECRETS OF STAGE ACTING BRING ABOUT RIOTOUS LAUGHTER

THE WORST PATIENTS ARE THOSE WHO DON’T WANT TO BE CURED. A group of young actors on tour perform an anthology of finely woven scenes from three pieces written by Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, a.k.a. Molière: Le Médecin volant (The Flying Doctor) (1645), L’Amour médecin (The Doctor of Love) (1665), and Le Médecin malgré lui (A Doctor in Spite of Himself) (1666). There is some question, of course, of feigned illness and disguised or impostor doctors. Above all, for Molière, there is some question about letting the laws of nature and desire, the rights of men and women who prefer pleasure, triumph over the austere lessons of all these solemn doctors or spiritual advisers. The question we must ask ourselves is this: are we going to die because of four doctors and two pharmacists, as Lisette says, or are we going to die of laughter?

QUAND LES SECRETS DU JEU DE LA SCÈNE ENTRAÎNENT DES ÉCLATS DE RIRE

IL N’Y A POINT DE PIRES MALADES que ceux qui ne veulent pas guérir. Un groupe de jeunes acteurs en tournée nous joue un florilège de scènes finement tissées à partir de trois pièces écrites par Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, dit Molière: Le Médecin volant (1645), L’Amour médecin (1665) et Le Médecin malgré lui (1666). Il est question, bien entendu, de maladies simulées et de médecins déguisés. Il est surtout question, pour Molière, de faire triompher les droits de la nature et du désir, les droits d’hommes et de femmes qui préfèrent le plaisir aux leçons austères de tous ces graves docteurs ou directeurs de conscience. La question que nous devons nous poser est la suivante: allons-nous mourir de quatre médecins et de deux apothicaires, comme le dit Lisette, ou allons-nous mourir de rire?
