The Spirit of Cameroon / L'Esprit du Cameroun
With more than 200 distinct ethnic and linguistic groups, and geographical features as varied as the rainforests in the west to the deserts in the south and north, Cameroon is fittingly nicknamed “Africa in Miniature.” As a result of this diversity, the music of Cameroon includes a wide variety of sounds and complex textures. The combination of 4/4 and 6/8 rhythms greatly contribute to the unique cosmopolitan sounds of Cameroonian music.
Inspired by his upcoming visit to his motherland in January 2009, The Spirit of Cameroon is Njacko’s gift to the people of Toronto. This will be the first ever event in Toronto exclusively devoted to the music of Cameroon. The audience will be served up a buffet of talent and musical flavours that are distinct to Cameroonian culture. Njacko Backo and Kalimba Kalimba will share the stage with three other Cameroonian artists: Jacques Yams, Fojeba, and Kome Manu.
Njacko is traveling to Cameroon to visit his family and celebrate the lives of his Mother and Father who passed away a few years ago. While in Cameroon, Njacko will also be visiting schools, with proceeds from the Toronto show going to support the purchase of supplies for school children in his birth country. Currently in the studio recording his 10th CD, “La Voix du Prophète – Ou est l’amour?” (“The voice of the Prophet – Where is Love”), Njacko and the band are giving Toronto the opportunity to sample of some of this album before its release in 2009. The new material will be sure to make you fly with some hot 6/8 Cameroonian rhythms and more ngoni (African harp). Njacko’s thought-provoking narratives are supported by the intensely talented ensemble Kalimba Kalimba (Chip Yarwood, Anne Lederman, Paco Luviano, Joaquin Nunez Hidalgo, Altaf “Bwana Moto” Vellani, and Celina Carroll).

A l’effet de cette diversité, la musique Camerounaise comprend une large variété de mélodies et de compositions complexes. La combinaison des rythmes 4/4 et 6/8 contribue énormément au son unique et cosmopolite de la musique Camerounaise.
Inspiré par sa prochaine visite dans sa patrie en Janvier 2009, l’Esprit du Cameroun est un cadeau de Njacko offert au public de Toronto. Ceci sera une véritable première à Toronto exclusivement dévouée à la musique Camerounaise. Le public sera servi un buffet talentueux et de saveurs musicales propres à la culture Camerounaise. Njacko Backo et Kalimba Kalimba partageront la scène avec trois autres artistes Camerounais : Jacques Yams, Fojeba, et Kome Manu.
Njacko retourne au Cameroun pour faire une visite à sa famille et pour commémorer l’existence de sa mère et de son père qui ont rendu l’âme il y’a quelques années. Au Cameroun, Njacko ne manquera pas de faire une visite aux écoles car le rendement de ce spectacle comptera comme moyen de subsistance pour l’achat des fournitures scolaires des élèves du Cameroun. Actuellement entrain d’enregistrer son dixième CD dans son studio, “La Voix du Prophète – Ou est l’amour?”, Njako et le groupe offrent à Toronto un échantillon de son album avant sa sortie en 2009. Ce nouveau chef d’œuvre va sûrement vous faire planer avec quelques rythmes 6/8 exotiques tout droit du Cameroun et plus de ngoni (harpe Africaine). La narration de Njako qui fait longtemps réfléchir est appuyée par Kalimba kalimba (Chip Yarwood, Anne Lederman, Paco Luviano, Joaquin Nunez Hidalgo, Altaf “Bwana Moto” Vellani, et Celina Carroll) un ensemble reconnu pour être intensément talentueux.
